SECR Reporting Deadline
The SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) deadline is 6 months after your company's financial year-end. This aligns with your annual return filing deadline to Companies House.
Common SECR Deadline Examples
The specific date depends on when your company's financial year ends:
| Financial Year End | SECR Report Due |
|---|---|
| 31 December | 30 June (following year) |
| 31 March | 30 September |
| 30 June | 31 December |
| 30 September | 31 March (following year) |
SECR applies only to companies meeting specific size thresholds. Check our guide on whether SECR is mandatory for your company.
What Happens If You Miss the SECR Deadline?
There is no SECR-specific regulator and no SECR-specific civil sanction regime.
Enforcement rides on Companies Act 2006 machinery instead. The disclosures sit in the directors' report filed at Companies House, and the FRC's Conduct Committee — an authorised body under section 457 of the Companies Act 2006 — monitors compliance through Corporate Reporting Review and can apply to court for revised accounts.
DESNZ described this in its May 2026 post-implementation review as a "light touch" regime that "works well for quoted companies, where FRC oversight is strongest, but is less effective for the wider private/LLP cohort".
The penalties below are the ordinary Companies House penalties for filing accounts late — they are not SECR penalties:
- Initial penalty: £150
- Additional penalties: Up to £1,500 for continued non-compliance
- Director disqualification: Possible in cases of persistent default
SECR vs UK SRS Timeline
| Requirement | Deadline | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| SECR | With the statutory accounts | Quoted companies of any size; large unquoted companies and LLPs |
| UK SRS | Accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027 (proposed) | In-scope listed companies, subject to the FCA Policy Statement |
SECR is not being phased out to make room for UK SRS. The DESNZ post-implementation review published on 26 May 2026 recommends "Amend" — retaining SECR with amendments, to be explored through a planned 2026 consultation on streamlining energy and emissions reporting that had not launched as of 27 July 2026.
